About Us
Westbank String Shop was born out of a dream of Dr. David W. Sloan, retired music educator and proprietor. He holds the bachelor of music and doctor of musical arts from the University of Texas at Austin, and the master of music education from Midwestern State University. After retiring in 1997 from a career in music that took him from Texas to Missouri, to Mississippi, and back to Texas, "Doc", as he is fondly referred to by many, opened the Westbank String Shop. The enterprise began in his garage with three rentals in 1995. In 1996, he attended the University of New Hampshire Violin Craftmanship Institute, under the direction of Horst Kloss, Boston Luthier. Since 1997, the shop has been located in the office park at 6301 Manchaca Road, Austin, Texas 78745.
