About West Bank String Shop
Family owned and operated, Westbank String Shop was born out of the dream of Dr. David W. Sloan, retired music educator, and founder/proprietor. Dr. Sloan holds a Bachelor of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as a Master of Music Education from Midwestern State University.
After retiring in 1997 from a career in music that took him from Texas to Missouri, to Mississippi, and back to Texas, “Doc”, as he is fondly referred to by many, opened the Westbank String Shop. The enterprise began in his garage with just three rentals in 1995.
In 1996, Doc attended the University of New Hampshire Violin Craftsmanship Institute, under the direction of Horst Kloss, Boston Luthier. Since 1997, the shop has been located at 6301 Menchaca Road, Austin, Texas.
In August of 2012, Todd purchased and continues the family tradition. 'Doc' retired in 2012. Todd studied at the New Hampshire School of Violin Craftsmanship Institute, under and continues to study with Paul Wiessmeyer of Boston and Olivier Perot of Montreal.
